Fashion at NSA is such a big thing, and it’s what makes everyone unique. Anyone can wear anything and not feel judged at all. It’s truly amazing. I wanted to interview a few people to see what they thought about fashion at our school on a deeper level. I had the pleasure of interviewing Grace Wilson, who is an 11th grader in the literary arts conservatory, Dia Todd, who is a 9th grader in the guitar conservatory, and D’Angelo, who is a 10th grader in the guitar conservatory.
I started by asking each of them how often do they buy clothes.
Dia- “2-3 times a month”
Grace - “I try to limit my consumption, so i haven’t bought clothes from online or department stores in about a month, but i go thrifting in my free time and usually pick up some pieces every other week I also borrow a lot of clothes from my friends so that’s kinda my form of “shopping.”
D’Angelo - “EVERY 2 MONTHS
The follow-up question I asked was, "What is your favorite type of clothing to wear?" I felt that it was important to see what different people were into wearing.
Grace - “I like to buy things that are unique and really stand out to me. I’ve been really into finding things that are trendy and still a little niche online, but I haven’t really hit the mainstream yet. I'm really into fun patterns, ballet flats, and big pants/skirts right now.”
Dia- “I genuinely love and admire all aspects of clothing and layering, so it’s incredibly hard to pick one.”
D’Angelo - “PANTS
Then I asked who was their fashion icon. It was important to see who they get their inspiration from and why they inspire them.
Dia - “Zooey Dechannel, she genuinely does it all, she can sing, act, dress, I think her outfits ruled the 2010s and will forever be alive. She is such a beautiful human being, and she has such a unique sense of fashion. It’s lowkey astounding to me when she wears something, and the whole world crumbles bc of how thought out it is.”
Grace - “Chloe Sevigny, Debbie Harry, Jane Birkin, and Cory Kennedy and Enya Umanzor”
D’Angelo - “ ASAP ROCKY”
“They play a lot with gender and silhouettes and don’t really feel restricted in their style to present more masculine or feminine, which I really enjoy. I also think there’s just a very “cool girl air” to all of those people, and their wardrobe and the brands they shop from really reflect that because everything feels so one-of-a-kind, like they know something you don’t, and they’re reflecting that through their outfit.”
I then asked the most important question that truly inspired this entire interview.
What do you think fashion means to NSA?
Dia: " NSA is a very artsy and creative school, so I think it’s very important that we let the kids here use their clothes to express themselves! There’s a lot of personality here, and you can tell that by literally watching everyone’s insanely planned-out outfits in the halls.”
1. D'Angelo - “ IT REALLY DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING IT'S JUST YOU BEING YOURSELF AND WEARING WHAT YOU WANT NOTHING SPECIAL.’’
Grace - “At nsa i think fashion is just this extra layer of expression that people already have here through their art. it kind of serves as an extension of themselves and i just love how everyone feels so comfortable wearing what they want and what makes them happy here. I literally wore a fur coat to school with platform boots before and didn’t even think twice about it because it just feels like any other day at NSA, and I knew I id get compliments on it instead of snide comments.”
I also had to ask who their favorite designer was because I feel like you can tell what a person's style is by their favorite designer.
Dia—“I really like Elie Saab. The way he styles the dresses to flow with the human body so fluidly is beautiful, and I love how he thinks because the clothes he creates are so eccentric but also very elegant.”
Finally, I wanted to get a good quote from each of them at the end of the interview.
Grace - "Eat well, love hard, be nice to your mom"
Dia - "Don’t be a d**k when someone is trying to find their own personal style"
D’Angelo - "STREAM ONIGIRI"
I also thought it would be a good idea to showcase people’s outfits around school!
Thank you to Grace, Dia, and Estella for letting me take pictures of them!!!
